Dr. Jeremy Smith earned his medical degree from New York Medical College where he received Alpha Omega Alpha honors and graduated at the top of his class. Dr. Smith went on to complete his orthopaedic residency at The University of California, Irvine, serving as chief resident in his final year. He then completed an orthopaedic surgery fellowship at the Rotham Institute at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital — a program that is widely regarded as one of the most sought-after and prestigious spine fellowships in the country.
Dr. Smith has authored multiple full length manuscripts and chapters in various medical journals, including The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, SPINE, and The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Smith has also received national honors for his work and has made significant lab and clinical contributions that have advanced the field, particularly in relation to spinal deformities. As a strong advocate for education. Dr. Smith acts as the Director of the Hoag Orthopaedic Institute Spine Surgery Fellowship, dedicated to mentoring the next generation of surgeons. Dr. Smith is currently serving as Chief of Staff at Hoag Orthopedic Institute, a specialty hospital dedicated to providing top-quality care to orthopedic surgical patients.
Dr. Slattery grew up in Gillette, Wyoming where his family still resides. Prior to college, he spent several years competing in junior hockey around the country and working as a welder and metal fabricator for local coal mines back home. He then returned to school and attended the University of Denver for his undergraduate studies before moving to Seattle for his medical degree at the University of Washington. Orthopedic surgery residency brought him to Albuquerque and was completed at the University of New Mexico. During his free time, he lives an active life filled with fitness, golf, hockey, sand volleyball, and most recently learning to surf and scuba dive.
The Hoag Orthopedic Institute Surgical Spine Fellowship is a 12-month post-residency program to train orthopedic surgeons in the specialty of spine surgery. Since 2016, Hoag Orthopedic Institute has graduated 5 fellows, all with impressive caseloads of 400+ patients. In addition to their medical responsibilities, each fellow has the following scholarly activities: Didactic work, case conference, and journal club with the spine surgeons each week. Each fellow also has a research requirement of 2-3 manuscripts throughout the year.
